Easy Crumb Topping
This is an easy crumb topping recipe! Made with very basic ingredients. This recipe doesn’t have any oats (nothing against oats). I wanted a homemade crumb topping that was similar to the frozen baked apple crumb pies (which we love, and are a great option for when you just don’t feel like lifting a finger in the kitchen). There’s just something about those crumb toppings! And… This recipe is pretty close – we loved it!
Here’s what I did:
I whisked together the dry ingredients, flour, powdered sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Making sure they were completely combined. I cubed a stick of butter (8 Tablespoons). I added the cubed butter into the flour mixture and used my hands to combine the butter (a pastry cutter, large fork, or butter knifes can be used). Continue to mix together until the mixture feels like damp sand. Once you’re able to grab a handful and squeeze it, the mixture should hold its shape. You can gently break into small clumps.
At this point you can choose to:
A. Use in any recipe that calls for a crumb topping. This recipe will produce enough crumb topping for 2 (8 inch) pies, or 1 (13×9 inch) pan.
B. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
C. Store in the freezer for a couple months. (For easy storage – divide the crumb topping into 2 quart sized ziploc baggies and label the outside for future use.)
D. Bake the crumb topping and use on anything. For example: top on ice cream, use on frosted cakes/cupcakes, use it to top fresh fruit and whipped cream, give that cracked cheese cake a crumble topping, or give yogurt a sweet crunch.
