Easy homemade cinnamon rolls are seriously, easy to make in your kitchen.

I have been making homemade cinnamon rolls, for years. I have tried other recipes in the past and wasn’t 100% happy about the outcome. I have been using this recipe and technique for a very long time. With a little help, our five year old son, can make cinnamon rolls.

{NOTE: This is a long post with lots of pictures. The purpose is to help you make cinnamon rolls, successfully.}

Let’s get started..

I have some pictures to help you. This is the way, I make easy homemade cinnamon rolls, at home. I use my bread machine to mix up the ingredients. You could also use your kitchen mixer with a dough hook. Another method, is just by hand. Once the dough has been formed, you use your hands for the rest of the process.

Once a dough has been formed, flour the counter and the top of dough. Roll out with a rolling pin. Roll the dough to about 15 x 20 inches. It doesn’t need to be perfect.

Spread the softened butter, over the top of dough. Make sure to spread all the way to the edges.

Pour the  brown sugar filling, on top of the butter. Spread the filling evenly near edges.

Now, it’s time to start rolling the dough. Start at the long edge, that’s closest to you. Fold it over to start the roll.

Continue to roll up the dough. Just like rolling up a yoga mat or towel. Be sure to keep a tight roll. You don’t want to roll it loosely, because the filling will fall out. Just take your time.

It should look like this beautiful thing. The finished cinnamon roll “log” should be anywhere between, 19 -23 inches long.

Now, it’s time to cut out the cinnamon rolls. The hard part is over. Slice the dough in half. You can decide if you want 12 rolls or 16 rolls.

Place the cut rolls into a lightly greased baking dish. Give them a little room to rise, in the pan.  Allow them to rise for 30 minutes.

  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 4 Tablespoons softened butter

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon softened butter
  • 2 – 4 Tablespoons milk

STEP ONE:

*Bread machine method – Place warm milk, sugar and yeast into the bread machine pan.  Allow to sit for 5 minutes to activate yeast. Add in the softened butter, vanilla, nutmeg, egg, salt, and 3 cups of sifted flour (set aside, 1 cup of sifted flour). Turn machine on the dough cycle, allow machine to mix and knead dough. {DO NOT RUN THE ENTIRE DOUGH CYCLE.} Keep an eye on the dough. If the dough still looks wet and sticky, add 1/4 cup increments of flour (from the remaining 1 cup of flour) to the dough. Once a soft dough has formed, turn off the machine.  Continue, with step two.

*MIxer Method – Place warm milk, sugar and yeast into the mixer bowl. Allow to sit for 5 minutes to activate the yeast. Add in the softened butter, vanilla, nutmeg, egg, salt, and 3 cups of sifted flour (set aside, 1 cup of sifted flour). Turn mixer on with dough hooks, allow machine to mix. Keep an eye on the dough and scrape the sides of bowl down. If the dough still looks wet and sticky, add 1/4 cup increments of flour (from the remaining 1 cup of flour) to the dough. Once a soft dough has formed, turn off the mixer. Flour the counter and start to knead the dough, for 5 minutes. Continue, with step two.

*Hand Method Place warm milk, sugar and yeast into the mixer bowl. Allow to sit for 5 minutes to activate the yeast. Add in the softened butter, vanilla, nutmeg, egg, salt, and 3 cups of sifted flour (set aside 1 cup of sifted flour). Use a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients. It will start to get tough to stir, use your hands to continue mixing. If the dough still looks and feels wet and sticky, add 1/4 cup increments of flour (from the remaining 1 cup of flour) to the dough. Once a soft dough has formed, flour the counter and start to knead the dough. Knead for 5 minutes. Continue, with step two.

STEP TWO: Flour the counter and roll out the dough to about 15 x 20 inches. Time to add the filling ingredients. Mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon and flour, in a small bowl. Spread 4 Tablespoons of softened butter, evenly on top of rolled out dough. Pour the brown sugar filling over the butter. Evenly, spread to edges. Start to roll up the dough with the long end, closest to you. Continue to roll, tightly. You should have a 19 – 23 inch rolled dough “log”. Cut the dough in half. You can evenly cut out 12 – 16 pieces. Place in a greased baking pan. Be sure to give each cinnamon roll some space to rise. Allow the cinnamon rolls to rise for 30 minutes.

STEP THREE: After the dough has been able to rise, preheat oven to 350F degrees. Bake for 25 minutes and cover loosely with foil, after 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool a few minutes, before spreading on the icing. For the icing: Combine the powdered sugar, softened butter and 2 Tablespoons of milk. Mix together to form icing. If icing is too thick, add 1 Tablespoon of milk at a time. Mix to check consistency. Spread over warm cinnamon rolls and enjoy! \
