Homemade Apple Butter

With five apple trees in our yard, I had to make fresh homemade apple butter! It’s so easy to make, too. You just peel, and slice the apples. And let the crock pot do all the work for you. Your house will smell like apple cinnamon goodness! This recipe is great for gift giving, freezing, and canning. Apple butter is great on toast, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, and baked goods.

My Honey Apple Butter Bread with Cinnamon Glaze, is a tasty way to use your homemade apple butter. This bread is also great for gift giving.

Here’s what I did:

I used my apple peeler (the one that suctions to the counter). It peels, cores, and slices the apples into a spiral. A simple hand held peeler and apple slicer, or regular chopping will work. I placed all the apples directly into the crock-pot. I tossed the apples in the brown sugar, and cinnamon. Placed the lid on the crock-pot and cooked on low for 4 – 5 hours. Stirring with a wooden spoon, occasionally. After the 4 – 5 hours, or when the apples are fully cooked, I turned off the crock-pot. I let the cooked apples cool, and used an immersion blender to turn them into a smooth consistency. A blender, or food processor will work too. That’s it!

I used apples that were more on the tart side. You can use any variety of apples. If you’re using sweeter apples, then cut back on the brown sugar.

  • 16 medium apples (I used tart apples)
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Step One: Peel, core, and slice apples. Place in a large crock-pot. Toss the brown sugar and cinnamon over the apples, and mix with a wooden spoon. Place the lid onto crock-pot and set on low. Cook for 4 – 5 hours. Stir occasionally, with a wooden spoon.

Step Two: Once the apples are fully cooked, turn off the crock pot. Allow the cooked apples to cool. Use an immersion blender, regular blender, or food processor, to blend the apples into a smooth consistency. Place in desired containers and keep stored in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

Recipe can be used for canning, and long term storage. Be sure to follow canning procedures.

Note: Any variety of apples can be used. If using sweeter apples, then cut back on the brown sugar. You can always taste test, and add more brown sugar if needed.
