Whole Wheat English Muffin Bread

If you’re a fan of english muffins then you’ll become a fan of this whole wheat english muffin bread.

The best way to eat this bread, is definitely toasted.  Homemade toasted bread is awesome!  You get lots of little nooks and crannies in this bread.  Which is great after you toast a couple slices and slather on butter.  Don’t forget to spread on a little jam.

This is a very easy recipe to put together and requires one rise.  The ingredients are very basic.  I’m sure you’ll have them on hand in your home already.  Which is great!  You can have a fresh loaf of homemade whole wheat english muffin bread, baking in no-time!

Whole Wheat English Muffin Bread – Makes one standard loaf

  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk
  • 1/2 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast – 2 1/4 teaspoons
  • 1 1/2 cups white whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  – Bread machine method –

STEP ONE: Pour the warm milk into bread machine pan and stir in the sugar.  Add the yeast to the warm milk and sugar, close lid and allow to rest for 5 minutes.  After the 5 minutes, add both flours, salt and baking soda to the bread machine pan.  Let the machine mix and form a dough.

STEP TWO: While the machine is mixing up the dough, spray a loaf pan (8X5 inch) with non-stick cooking spray.  When the machine has formed a dough, remove the dough and place into prepared loaf pan.  Use your hands to spread the dough evenly in the pan.  Loosely cover the pan with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise in a warm area.  This should take about 45 minutes.

STEP THREE: Once the dough has risen and doubled, preheat the oven to 375 F degrees.   Bake for 30 minutes, for a light crust.  If you want a darker crust bake for 40 minutes.  Allow to cool on wired racks until warm enough to handle the pan.  Carefully remove the bread from the pan and allow to fully cool on a wired rack.   Slice and toast slices when ready to eat.

 – Hand Method –

STEP ONE:  Spray a loaf pan (8×5 inch) with non-stick cooking spray, set aside.  In a large bowl, pour in the warm milk and sugar, mix together.  Add the yeast and allow to rest for 5 minutes.  After the 5 minutes, add in the flours, salt and baking soda.  Use a wooden spoon to mix together.  Once the mixture starts to get tough to stir, use your hands and knead into a dough.  Knead for a few minutes.

STEP TWO:  Place the dough into prepared loaf pan.  Evenly spread the dough in pan.
